The Technical Town Hall was built in the 1970s as part of the effort to revive Frankfurt’s Old Town after the destruction of the Second World War. Its construction was preceded by numerous studies and architectural competitions addressing the redevelopment of the vacant area between the Cathedral and the Römer. Issue 32 of Bauwelt from 1973 provides a comprehensive overview of this project. It also mentions the Historical Museum, which was likewise built in the Brutalist style, as well as the planned development of the central zone — plans that were ultimately never realized.
With the expiration of the leasing agreement concluded in 1994 and the resulting reversion of the building to the City of Frankfurt, the city was required to decide on the future use of the building and the site.
